Topic – Walking in the Old Path with New Strength

Text – 1 John 2:7,8; Jeremiah 6:16; Romans 13:11-14; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6; Hebrews 4:1,11; 6:1; 12:1,28

“Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning” (1 John 2:7). Last year is gone, a new year has now come. What we are hearing is a new thing but the word of God is still the ancient old word, we have been hearing. Prayer, purity, charity, power of the Holy Ghost, love, patience, kindness, humility, honesty, watchfulness, is old but yet new. To walk in the old path, the strength of yesteryears is not enough. We need a renewed strength to walk in the old path of holiness and righteousness. He wants us to walk in the old paths but with new strength. To have this word of God established in our hearts. Let us walk in the old paths.  We should be conscious of our environment, of the word of God, of your life in the past, of the signs of our times. Because there is danger if you are careless, and there is a devil out there that will fight against you, let’s us walk with the Lord. The Lord is calling us to walk in obedience, and put aside all things not according to His Will, to walk straight in honesty, humility and holiness. Be awake and understand the word of God.  The Lord is calling you to a new way of life, but the old consecration, convictions, and confession you have made, the doctrines you have been taught you made are still valid. The things you learnt in the past are still important, don’t forget them, those principles and commandments are still important. You cannot forget, you are living and walking in the new day, but the old paths you keep. The Lord gives us a lot of promises this year, and He will fulfil them in Jesus Name. The promises in every area of our lives.

This year we need to think about growing, going on to perfection. This year, let’s go into perfection. Grow up and get into maturity, leave behind all those childish attitudes. Let’s move on and be more in where we ought to be than in the past. This year, we are going to grow up unto perfection.  “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). The things that bring pressure upon your life, and its voluntary, you can lay them aside. He knows that is our responsibility that’s why He commanded us to lay them aside. And all the besetting sins, your peculiarities, shortcomings, lay them aside. And let’s have grace of God that is sufficient for us, the grace of God to sustain, sanctify and supports us. The prayers we are praying for this year should be prayers for the grace of God to sustain, supports and sanctifies us. Be conscious of the life you live, the things you do, and things around you. Serve the Lord with all reverent fear, not being frivolous nor carelessness. Your comportment should show that you have reverence and honour for God. This year, our attitude, lifestyles, worship, reverence for God will be new.

Point 1. Waiting Expectantly for Christ’s Return

1 Thessalonians 1:8-10; 2 Thessalonians 3:5; Habakkuk 2:3-4; Hebrews 10:37-39; Luke 12:34-38; Acts 24:15,16; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 John 3:1-3; Hebrews 3:6,12-14; 1 Peter 1:3,4

When you see all the signs that Christ gave, and they are being fulfilled in our eyes, this is the time to wait for His Return. The story of the Gardener that cleans up the garden as if the master might come today. “For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing” (1 Thessalonians 1:8). Can we say that about your salvation? That through your lifestyle and behaviour, people will see the life of true Christianity in you, and we don’t have to say anything.  The Lord may come today, and we need to be waiting expectantly for His Return. The Lord might come before you have the chance to repent and make right my ways, so we want to wait for Him. Let the Lord directs your life, and wait patiently for His perfect Will, and grant you that thing in His own time. There might be delay, don’t grumble, not backslide before of the delay, tarry before, and live by faith. Wait expectantly. “For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry” (Habakkuk 2:3). All the promises the Lord has made for you this year, will not tarry, but there will be a fulfilment in your life in Jesus Name. The Lord hates pride, He wants us to remain humble, don’t talk about yourself nor your family. Remain humble before God, forget all about yourself. Have the attitude of humility. Let’s talk about Jesus and Him only. We should allow the Lord to blow our trumpet, and we remain humble.

Christ is coming, and that’s why we need to live our lives by faith, there is no time to backslide nor to go astray, nor go into false doctrine, nor look back this year, because the Lord will soon come. Christ is coming, and I pray He will meet you prepared.  “But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul” (Hebrews 10:39). Those who draw back, are drawn back to perdition. There is nothing like eternal security. We need to be watching and waiting for the coming of the Lord. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Luke 12:34). If your treasure is in Heaven, in Christ and God, in the Church, your heart will be in heaven, Christ and the church. But if your treasure is in the world, in the merriment, allurements of the world, then your heart will be in the world. We should be eager and earnest for the Return of the Lord as a man will wait earnestly in expectation of the arrival of his spouse from overseas. There is preparation to be made as we expect the Lord’s Coming. That hope of His Return will make us to keep our conscience ready for the Lord’s Returning. Keep your conscience, clear and clean, honest, sincere and holy.  It is a comforting hope; the hope we have that the Lord is coming. And when something happens that wants to discourage us, remember the Coming of the Lord, and when He comes, all these problems shall be taken away, and the Lord will reward you for your faithfulness in Jesus Name.  The world does not know because we are not like them, we don’t dress like they dress, don’t drink as they drink, we will allow ourselves to be their sin partners, the world does not appreciate that. So they do not know us, they will not give you the recognition that they give to other members of the family because of your beliefs. “And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure” (1 John 3:3). This hope is a sanctifying hope.

This hope is a;

It is a purifying hope – makes you to be sanctified

It is a preventive hope – prevents you from sinning against God.

It is a practical hope – makes you to be conscious of the fact that He is coming

It is a pacifying hope – makes you to be at peace with people

It is a persevering hope – makes you to endure all the trials and troubles.

It is a perfecting hope – perfect you every time in the ways and Will of God.

“But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end” (Hebrews 3:6). Hold that hope firm till the very end. And the hope that gives us life spiritually in Christ Jesus, and without that hope you will be dead. There are things you will not get until you get to heaven, that’s why we are to keep on being holy, loyal, faithful, obeying His commandments, depending upon the Lord, and ready for His coming.

Point 2. Working Earnestly until Christ’s Return

Mark 13:34-37; John 9:4; 4:34; Acts 26:19-20; Ephesians 4:11-14,25,28-32; 2 Timothy 2:2-5,21,22; 4:2-5; 2 Peter 3:10-14

In this year, as we approach His coming, you want to examine the kind of work you are doing for the Lord.  In the light of His coming, He gives us responsibility, things to do, duties to perform. “And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch” (Mark 13:37). Jesus Christ warned His disciples to be ready and watchful for His coming. He did not give them the idea that whatever happens, you will make it. And the same thing He tells us today.

He has given us work to do in the church, to our families, and to neighbours. He wants us to do this work as He would have done it. Have the mind and attitude of Christ in you as you do what He has given us to do.  “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work” (John 9:4). There is a must in me to do what He has commanded me to do for Him.  I am sent by the Lord Himself, so I cannot leave that duty post. A little thing will not discourage me and make me to run away from my duty post. This is what the Lord wants me to do and I am going to do as one that is sent by God and to finish His work. Why should you do it if the Lord has not send you? This is what causes problem in your life. Jesus Christ knew that He was a Sent Messiah and Saviour. “Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision” (Acts 26:19). I can’t be disobedient to the heavenly vision, not the mundane nor earthly vision. That is the vision and work He has given us to do as well. You have to concentrate on that work that the Lord has given us to do. You might not be a prophet or an apostle, but He has given you something to do, as a father, mother, student leader, campus leader, do what He has given you to do.

Whatever He has given you to do, is for the perfecting of the saints, to make them stand fast in the knowledge of the Lord, for the edifying of the body of Christ, to make the saints matured in Christ. If you are working earnestly for the Lord, that purpose will be in your mind, to perfect the saints, and make them stable in the Lord. He wants us to do the work as He Himself would have done it. And if we are going to do this, our character will show as we want to do the work like Christ did. Tell the truth in our relationship with one another, put away lying in our relationship with one another, be transparently true to one another in everything you do or say. “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth” (Ephesians 4:28). This is the influence of our ministry, that let him that stole, lied, steal or lie no more. That we are changing lives. Let all bitterness, anger, clamour, fighting, be put away. Let there be love among ourselves as couples this year and as a church. Let’s work on this, get genuinely saved and sanctified, then anger, bitterness will be put away in Jesus Name.  Live a holy, righteous life, affectionate life, that will make others happy as well that they are in the kingdom of God. We don’t give the work of God as a toy to pacify people in the church, but we are to give this work to faithful people. We don’t give ministry or positions in the church out of fear, to pacify people. “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine” (2 Timothy 4:2). Let your life, attitude, relationships, responsibility in the place of work, everything you do, dressing, movements, interactions, preach the word this year, not just from the pulpit but that you are living the life that is giving out the word of God. The works in the world shall be burnt up. If all you do is for the work of the world, that you are so busy in the world, and no time for the work of the Lord. What gain will you have if you gain the whole world and lose your soul or reward in heaven. I pray when He comes, you will not be ashamed in Jesus Name.

Point 3. Witnessing Eagerly before Christ’s Return

Luke 19:10,13; John 4:34,35-38; 17:17-18; Mark 1:36-38; Acts 23:11; Romans 1:16; Acts 8:4

That’s the work He given us with the gift of the Holy Ghost. And when He comes back, He is going to check up on how you have traded with the talents that He has given you.

This was what the Lord concentrated upon when He was on earth. And He has passed this unto us. Any lost person around you, in your family and place of work, what will Jesus do? He will seek for them, the same thing He has passed unto us, to seek the lost. To occupy till He comes. “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest” (John 4:35). Are you delaying? Don’t do that, this is the time for the harvest.  We are sent, to save souls, restore backsliders to the faith, and believers to be edified. Those He prayed for to be sanctified, are those He sent out as the Father has sent Him as well to preach the word. We are to go to the people that have not heard, and give them the gospel message. Let there be a must in your life and heart. A must to preach the gospel. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16). The Lord is calling upon you as a Scriptural Christian that we need to get the word out to other people and get people saved. This year is a year of Soul winning, sanctification, and bringing many souls to the Lord.

A Christian that will be a pleasing unto the Lord like Enoch will be a;

– Saved Christian

– Sanctified Christian

– Spiritual, Spirit-filled, Spirit-controlled Christian

– Soul-winning Christian

– Second Coming Christian

– Submissive Christian

– Serving Christian

The Lord wants you to examine yourselves and see if you are this type of Christian as listed above.

Ponder on this!  The Lord is calling us to walk in obedience, and put aside all things not according to His Will, to walk straight in honesty, humility and holiness. Pastor (Dr) W.F Kumuyi.

Reflections – There are things you will not get until you get to heaven, that’s why we are to keep on being holy, loyal, faithful, obeying His commandments, depending upon the Lord, and ready for His coming. Pastor (Dr) W.F Kumuyi.
