Special Study – THE SHEPHERD’S SUPREME SACRIFICE FOR HIS SHEEP

Text – John 10:11-21; Matthew 9:36; 10:6,7; Luke 19:42; Job 5:14; Jeremiah 50:6; 1 Peter 2:25; John 10:11,12,1,5,10a

As you look at this passage, John 10:11-18, you will see that Jesus is talking about the Shepherd, and He said I am the Good Shepherd. The characteristic of that Good Shepherd is that He laid down His life for the Sheep, and took it back again. He was talking about His Death and Resurrection, about His supreme sacrifice. In this chapter, our Lord and Saviour Jesus talks about the Shepherd and the other people that claimed to be the shepherd, but Jesus said that they were not true nor faithful, they were hirelings. He gave this as a parable unto them. “This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them” (John 10:6). His immediate audience and hearers were familiar with shepherding of flocks and sheep, and yet they couldn’t understand His teaching. The people of Israel had become lost sheep and sinful, but He came to bring them back to the Father, to salvation.  They were weak, He came to strengthen them;  deceived, He came to show them the right way  They were ignorant, He came to instruct, inform and reveal the mind of the Father in Heaven unto them. They were misled, but now He wanted to gather them together. They were vulnerable, open to attack and destruction; they were lost.

There were many that claimed that they were shepherds, leaders, teachers, to give instructions to the people, but they were not actually doing the work, so therefore, the people were like sheep without a shepherd.  Jesus was now sending the 12 disciples to go and preach to the people and bring the lost sheep back home to the Father. “But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 10:6).  But till the end of the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ, they still couldn’t come back to the Lord, that He lamented and wept over them because they were lost, and remained in their lost wilderness of sin. They were lost in their darkness, superstition and religion, and Jesus Christ came as the Great, Good and Glorious Shepherd and yet they couldn’t understand, and couldn’t see that here is Jesus, here is the Lord and the One that has come to bring us back to the Father. Those Pharisees couldn’t help the people at all. The people came to their temples, synagogues and yet they were groping in darkness. “My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place” (Jeremiah 50:6). They were in the wilderness, gone astray but then Jesus came to recover them, and bring them back. Their shepherds who were to go before them and lead them into pasture, into the good revelation of the word of God, caused them to go astray. They have forgotten how to get to heaven, their resting place, but Jesus came as Saviour and Shepherd, so that we can return unto Him, though heavy laden with sin, and find rest for our souls.

Those people went into their Synagogues, as many of us go to Churches, they went to their temples, many of us go to our conferences, serving the Lord, and yet have gone astray, until Christ came to call us into the fold. The Lord through His supreme sacrifice brought us back to the Shepherd and Bishop of our soul, because He died to take away our sins.

Those leaders of Israel, the high priests and the Sanhedrin, the Pharisees and the Sadducees, the Scribes, the teachers, who were supposed to be shepherds over the people became false prophets, deceivers, enemies of the Saviour, of salvation, and of righteousness, they were blind leaders, thieves and robbers, hirelings, sacrificing the sheep to keep their positions. “But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep” (John 10:12). These were pretenders, they wanted to keep their positions, offices in the Synagogues, and wasted the lives of those people, and many of them died without having salvation, because those leaders did not want them to have knowledge of the Truth, and the freedom to make a choice of their own lives.  They were selfish, wicked, depraved, sinful, hardened, blind, deaf, and they were desperate shepherds who stole the hearts of the people to their destruction. But thank God, Jesus is our Savour, Shepherd, and Lord, and He will rescue every one of us from those devouring thieves and robbers of religion in Jesus Name.

3 points;

Point 1.  The Scattering of the Sheep under Hired Strangers

John 10:12,13; Micah 3:11-12; Nehemiah 6:10-13; Job 7:2; Isaiah 56:10,11; Ezekiel 22:27,28; Zephaniah 3:1-5; Matthew 7:15-20; Acts 8:19,18-20; Romans 16:18; Philippians 2:21; 2 Peter 2:3

John 10:12,13: They were hirelings, hired hands, hired servants, hired stewards, hired people and hired strangers. It is not everybody carrying the Bible, that you run after. It is not everybody saying I am a prophet, teacher, pastor, bishop, and then you carry your Bible and go after them. It is not everybody that opens the door of a particular hall, and they call it an assembly or fellowship, whatever name, a good name, and yet they do not know the way into heaven, the way that leads to the Saviour, to holiness and righteousness of life. That was Jesus why warned us about these hirelings who are  strangers from the grace of God. “But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep” (John 10:12) They are just there as workers for pay. The hireling, in the language of Jesus Christ, is in the business of religion, he is there for money, material gain, personal profit, position of honour, popularity, political advancement. The Lord said that these were hired strangers and did not have the heart, mind and desire of the Lord.

  1. They were strangers to the heart of the Shepherd, they do not have the heart, mind, love and desire of the Shepherd to see that the sheep are preserved.
  2. They were strangers to the mind of Jesus Christ
  3. They were strangers to the value of a soul. They did not understand the salvation and importance of a soul.
  4. They were strangers to the love of God for the sinners. They do not know about the love of God that led to the Sacrifice of His Only Begotten Son
  5. They were strangers to the demand of holiness for heaven. They manifested anger, jealousy, envy, slander, and quite a lot of things strange to holiness.

The hirelings were just for hire and if the sheep scatter they would go elsewhere to look for employment. They were not interested in the salvation of souls, holiness or things of the Lord at all. “The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us” (Micah 3:11).  In the religious world today, they teach for money, salaries, what can I get out of this, benefits and money. They prophecy and offer prayers for money. They do religion for hire, for what they can get out of it. This has been on for a long time, not just today. They prophesy what people want to hear for personal gain, profits and promotions.

Nehemiah 6:10-13 – “And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him” (Nehemiah 6:12). They hired him to discourage Nehemiah, nd weakened his hand from building the walls of Jerusalem. I pray all those hired strangers will not stop you nor affect your conviction and courage, nor stop you from that good work. You will keep on doing what you’re doing for the Kingdom of God in Jesus Name. “As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow, and as an hireling looketh for the reward of his work” (Job 7:2). We are not like them. We don’t pay our workers here as hirelings, God will reward your work wonderfully in Jesus Name. Thank God, you are not a hireling, our reward is in Heaven. The joy of service will be the strength of your life in Jesus Name. Talking about these hirelings, Isaiah they are greedy dogs, for hire, they cannot have enough. Looking for gain. I pray that your service will not be for gain, but that your heart, soul will be there as you serve the Lord, do soul winning, evangelism, you will not be like these hirelings in Jesus Name.

Ezekiel 22:27-28. They destroy souls to get gain, they do not know the value of souls, they are strangers to Calvary and why Jesus died for sinners. They close up the word of God, salvation, righteousness and say other things just to destroy souls. I pray they will not catch you or destroy your soul.

They don’t have any connection or relationship with the Lord. They do violence to the word of God, remove it from the root, tear it apart and misinterpret it just to have their own interpretation for gain. If you are going to be faithful to the word of God, you will read the whole Word of God, and interpret it very well, to convict those hirelings, so that they will turn away from their evil and seek the Lord. Our Lord Jesus warned against false prophets (Matthew 7:15-20) and you should be courageous enough o say what Jesus has said.

Acts 8:18-20. Here is a hireling trying to get into the Ministry to get more money by selling religion. “And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money” (Acts 8:18). He offered them money to get the power of the Holy Ghost. He was a hireling. But Peter said, “Thy money perish with thee” (Acts 8:20). Hired strangers, hirelings, strangers to the grace of God, to the value of souls, to the mind of Christ, love of the Shepherd and to the plan of God. If you are there for money, position or promotion, you are not serving the Lord Jesus Christ. All seek their own exaltation, power, money, influence, position, not the things that belong to Jesus Christ. They turn church to a market and make merchandise of you. I pray you will not damned and condemned with them. That means you must come out of them, and not be unequally yoked together with those unbelievers.  You will not stay with them, not abide with them.

Point 2. The Sacrifice of the Shepherd for Helpless Sheep

John 10:11,14-18; Matthew 20:28; 1 Corinthians 5:7; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 Timothy 2:3-6; Hebrews 9:22,25-28; Galatians 1:4; 2:20; Ephesians 5:2,25-27; Titus 2:14; Hebrews 10:12-17; 13:20,21

Sheep helpless, sheep apparently and seemingly hopeless, they could not help themselves as they were lost, but Jesus made the supreme and final sacrifice to save them. The reason you know that He is the Good Shepherd is he is not asking the sheep to be sacrificed for Him but He is laying down His life for the sheep.  He was not afraid of dying, sacrificing His life so the sheep can be saved; so that the grace of God will come to these people as a result of His Supreme Sacrifice. “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd” (John 10:16). He is talking about the Gentiles, because at that time, all His disciples were Jews. But He had us in mind then, and now we are born again. And if you are here, not born again, come to the Lord and be saved today for He had you in mind. “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again” (John 10:17). He is talking about the attitude of the Father to His sacrifice, His death at the Cross of Calvary and His Resurrection from the dead. He had the power to take His life back, but He laid it down for you and me, because He loves us.

As you think about Jesus Christ something is very clear; He is the Good Shepherd:

  1. He is the Sacrifice – sacrificed His life
  2. He is the Substitute. He died your death
  3. He is the Saviour – laid down his life so you can be saved
  4. He is Our Sanctifier –Adamic nature removed to qualify for heaven
  5. He is Our Sin Bearer – bore penalty of our sin
  6. He is Our Passover – His Blood cancels judgement and calamity
  7. He became Our Propitiation – The Sacrifice that appealed to God
  8. He became Our Ransom – so the wrath of God will not come on us
  9. He became Our Redeemer, Meditator, Atonement for the Sheep

That is why He said He laid down His life for everyone with no exception, for every generation until this generation, now you can come to the Lord, and He will take all your sin, evil, penalty for your sins away in Jesus Name.

“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). He took all your sins, sickness, every curse and every work of the devil in your life away. Thank God salvation is available. “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4). All your neighbours, can be saved, tell them, Jesus died for them, He wants all men to be saved.

It was necessary that Jesus Christ ought to die, for God to take away, overlook and forgive our sins. What was the giving of Himself to do in my life and the life of every sheep? “Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father” (Galatians 1:4). He gave Himself for our salvation, all we have to do is to turn away from those sins. He paid the price already, and He delivers us from every evil in the world. Galatians 2:20. This Christ will live in you; and if Christ is there, Satan, evil power, sicknesses will not live inside you if Christ is living within you, for Light and darkness cannot live together.

He gave Himself for our:  1. Salvation;  2. Sanctification

Ephesians 5:2,25; Titus 2:14; Hebrews 10:12; 13:20-21

If you are part of His church, and you are not sanctified, not praying for sanctification, not interested in sanctification, you are overlooking, rejecting and abandoning the reason why Jesus gave Himself for His Church. Look at His sorrows, agonies and sufferings that He gave Himself for the Church. He did that for us and we shall reap the benefits of that sanctification in Jesus name. “Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works” (Titus 2:14). Jesus gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity and make us zealous of good works. Get back to Calvary if you are lukewarm, cold, and lethargic to get this benefit of Calvary.  Jesus Christ is that Great Shepherd of the Sheep. He will make us perfect in every good work. The price has been paid. Jesus has died:-

  1. To bear the penalty of our sins
  2. To give Eternal Life, Salvation to everyone that believes
  3. To make us righteous and gives us a new life in Christ
  4. To heal us of all sickness and to keep us healthy
  5. To deliver us from the present evil world
  6. To destroy any and every work of the devil in your ministry & life
  7. To sanctify us and make us holy
  8. To restore all the we lost through Adam

Jesus is our Saviour, Sanctifier, and Shepherd, and He will be to you in reality in Jesus Name.

Point 3. The Schism and the Slander among Hypocritical Scoffers

John 10:19-21; 7:40-43; Proverbs 1:22-33; Isaiah 53:4-8; Acts 8:32-35

John 10:19-21. There was division between them for the saying of Jesus Christ in the previous verses. He had told them the truth, so why were they divided? They were scoffers, scorners and blasphemers, sinners, but there were intelligent, sincere, forthright people. Many said all those things through envy, tradition, religion without righteousness, salvation, holiness, heaven, religion that does not separate them from Satan and their own sins; they were angry, their hearts were hard. They called themselves shepherds, but they had become wolves, they were to protect the lost sheep, but they had become hardened; they turned religion to business, were rebellious instead of repenting and becoming believers, they rebelled and became blasphemous, they were the losers, none of them is in heaven, because they did not repent. But you will not follow them in Jesus Name. Jesus and His disciples and the people that followed are now in heaven. I will not follow these blasphemous people into hell, but will follow Jesus into heaven.

The Person that the Father testified about as His Son, Angels called Him Saviour, the Psalmist called Him Shepherd, the Spirit of God called Him the Sanctifier, and they called Him by another thing. They were the people that had the devil, and have followed the devil into hell.  I pray that none of us will have that kind of mind in Jesus Name. These people were just scoffers and scorners and did not have eternal life because they have not believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. If you reject the Truth, the Shepherd and the Saviour, then He will not answer your prayers. I will hearken, listen and believe. The Old Testament talks about Jesus Christ that is coming to be the Final Sacrifice, and these Pharisees that read and studied the Old Testament, but did not believe when Jesus Christ came to our Supreme Sacrifice. Jesus is your Saviour, Final Sacrifice, Sin-Bearer, Sanctifier, Substitute, Shepherd, and as you call upon Him tonight, He will answer your prayer, to save you and turn around your life, and take you deeper in the Kingdom. Call and pray unto the Lord, make Him your Shepherd, Saviour and Everything for you today.

Ponder on this! These were pretenders, they wanted to keep their positions, offices in the Synagogues, and wasted the lives of those people, and many of them died without having salvation, because those leaders did not want them to have the knowledge of the Truth, and the freedom to make a choice of their own lives. Pastor (Dr) W.F Kumuyi.

Reflection – If you are there for money, position or promotion, you are not serving the Lord Jesus Christ. Pastor (Dr) W.F Kumuyi.
