Special Study:  CHRIST’S POWER OVER SIN AND SUFFERING

John 9: 1-12; Psalms 146:8; Isaiah 42:19-21, Luke 7:21; Acts 26:18; 2 Corinthians 4:4-6; 1 John 2:11; Revelations 3:17-18

As you look at this passage, it might appear very simple, of course it is, but this particular miracle of healing of a man that was born blind was only recorded in John’s Gospel. This miracle, and all the events that surround it came through the inspired pen of John the Beloved. Only John had given us this record and sight, miracles and wonders that go to show that this is Christ, the Messiah. John specially chosen the miracles the he wrote about, to give us signs and miracles that goes to prove that this Jesus is the True Messiah, and Son of the Living God, the Christ.

As you look at this passage, you will see the following;

1. The Mystery of suffering unveiled and Resolved. Jesus resolves very mystery in our lives.

2. The Majesty of Christ in Revelation. You can see the demonstration of the majesty of Jesus Christ, He was not perplexed about the situation, and the glory of Christ was manifested in his life. Looking at the other Gospels, Matthew, Mark & Luke, the blind men came and appealed to Jesus Christ for their healing. But in this case, the man did not approach Jesus, it was the love of God, the initiative of God Himself that reached down to this man, it was the initiative of Christ to meet and heal him. There are times you are slow in asking the Lord for your miracle, but the Lord will take the initiative to reach down to you. And a wonder happens

3. The In-gratitude of carnal, natural, and unsaved sinful men in the world. The Pharisees were only concerned about the Sabbath day. They were not thinking of the darkness that this man had lived all these years.

4. The blindness of the Jewish leaders and the whole nation. They could not see that this is the Christ.

5. The beauty and the benefit of solitary faith in Christ. This man without the support of his parents and others around him, he solitarily beloved the Lord, and received his sight. Nobody can hinder you from receiving your miracle, if you make up your mind solitarily as an individual to believe, the miracle of salvation, healing, deliverance will come your way. And all the benefits of Calvary will be yours.

6. The courage of standing alone, and standing firm without compromising with the religious blind leaders of the land. The man stood firm, like you are going to stand firm and courageously.

Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever. What He did before, He is still able to do today. And as He opens the eyes of the blind in days gone by, he is still opening the eyes of the blind even today as we believe on Him. That power will never change, and it is here tonight to open the eyes of the blind. “The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous” (Psalms 146:8), “Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD’S servant?” (Isaiah 42:19). You might not be physically blind, even being born again and a servant of the Lord, a soul winner, and worker in the house of the Lord, but you are blind to the future, to deep, deep things in the word of God, to the provision of Calvary for you, to the things you could be, and the things you could do, you are blind. Seeing many things but observe them not. That blindness spiritual, physical, prophetic, and hereditary, He will take away in Jesus Name. “And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight” (Luke 7:21). Jesus Christ has not changed, His power has not changed, and all the possibilities in His Name has not changed. He gives sight to those who are blind.

He will open their blind eyes to the provision of Calvary, to the interpretation of the Old Testament, to the reality of who Jesus Christ is, and what position, power, privileges that Christ brings us into. He will open your eyes tonight. Satan with all their tradition, idol worship, all occultism, and the evil things that pagans do, has blinded their hearts and eyes to see the light of Christ. He will take the blindness of the hearts away tonight. You are in for something, and will get everything that God has provided for you in Jesus Name. “But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes” (1 John 2:11). There are people that are going with hatred in their hearts, consciousness, subconscious lives, within them, and oozing out of their lives, their words, thoughts, minds, dispositions, and everything about them are that of hatred, and they do not know that they are blind, because the darkness of that hatred had blinded their hearts and lives, but thank God, blind eyes are opening tonight and the Lord will set you free in Jesus Name. But there are some people that do not know that they are blind. “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked” (Revelations 3:17). What a tragedy! But the Lord wants to open all those blind eyes. Tonight, I will see the glory of God in Jesus Name.

1.  THE OPINIONS AND MANY FALLACIES IN THEIR CULTURE

John 9:1-3

Everybody comes with a particular culture. There is a culture of your tribe, and places where you came from.  Many of the opinions were wrong and fallacious.

Why did the disciples ask this question?

1. The Fact – they saw the man was born blind – John 9:1,20; Matthew 19:12; Acts 3:2; 14:8

The man was born blind, and he did not know why he was born blind. There are some people that have some diseases, predicaments, challenges even at birth. It is a fact that you look at life, you see a man that is born lame, blind, impotent, a little bit dull, these are things that happened to people, but the solution is in Christ. “And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple” (Acts 3:2). There are things we see in people that they couldn’t help it for that is the way they were born. You might notice the fact in your own life, that is spiritual, physical, social, whatever it is, but that is not the end, Jesus will solve our problems and wipe all those things aways. But we cannot shy away from the fact that this is the way I was born.

2. The Fallacy – Who did sin?  John 9:2; Psalms 51:5; 58:3; Isaiah 48:8; Matthew 16:13-14

“And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?” (John 9:2). See the question they asked. You see sometimes after we are born again, we are born again, our hearts are changed, and transformed, but the notions we had before we were born again, the particular culture that we grew up with, all those notions still need to be corrected. The culture, if we don’t deal with them, we will be carrying those things on our hands, and in our minds, and we will be saying that this problem is because of this or that because of the fallacies we carried from our uncircumcised and unsaved state. The Jewish people look at Scriptures and they mis-interpreted that scriptures, that somebody can be born with a deformity even before he was born. This is a fallacy and cannot be correct. Because everyone was born in sin. That people because they were going astray before they were born, so they will have some challenge even before they were born. This is a fallacy. It was a mis-interpretation of the word of God by those Jewish people, that people will have those deformity even before they were born. “Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb” (Isaiah 48:8). This means that every one that is born of a woman is a sinner. We all are born a sinner by nature. So, the Jewish went further to say that some sins we have committed been before we were born are the cause of the deformity or disease in some people’s lives. This is fallacy. “And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets” (Mathew 16:14). See the fallacy of this people. They even said that John the Baptist, or Elijah that came back to life, because of the erroneous belief of the Heriodias and the nations around them beloved the erroneous belief of Reincarnation. So anyone that is doing good, they will say this is John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah that came back. But on the other hand, when they see any one that is born blind, they will say that that person had lived a terrible and bad life before, so that is why he came back as a blind man. This is what the Hindus, and all the other religions that do not have the light of Christ in them believe, that there is reincarnation, and whatever one is facing today is as a result of the former life he or she lived before in the former life. This is a fallacy. There is nothing like reincarnation. This is what Jesus corrected.

3. The Falsehood – the sin of the parents that made the man blind – John 9:3; Jeremiah 31:29; Lamentations 5:7; Ezekiel 18:1-3

The children of Israel have some erroneous beliefs, and the Lord corrected them. I will take corrections. There are some people that were going to all those white garment churches before they were born again. There were some traditions, culture, ideologies of those churches that they will bring into the grace of God with them. They are still believing those errors and ideologies. And there are some people that were in the other religion before they were born again, and they were something that they taught them there, that whatever happens to a man, that is God’s predestination, or work of God, and they will carry same into the Christian faith. Everything will be washed away in your mind today in Jesus Name. “Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities” (Lamentations 5:7). There are some Christians that still believed that they are suffering from the sins of their parents. But Christ will deliver you, and cancel all those negative effects in your life. That is falsehood.

We should not say that again, not say those opinions again, nor be bogged down by those falsehood anymore, because they are fallacies and falsehood. We have learnt that the children of Israel believed just like the pagan nations around them, mis-interpreting Scriptures, some believed that sickness, calamities, deformities, accidents, disease, sufferings came as a result of sin committed before their birth. But nothing like that in your life, family, business, spiritual life in Jesus Name, and you will be delivered. You’re being a Christian, successful, victorious and righteous depends on you and does not depend on them. All those curses are broken tonight. Others believed that God is punishing innocent children for the sins of their parents. But Jesus says no to all those calamity, tradition, culture, erroneous beliefs, and you will be delivered in Jesus Name. The time has come for God to manifest in your life, to destroy all the works of the devil, and set you free, and I am free tonight.

2. THE OUTCOME OF MAN’S FOOLISHNESS AND CORRUPTIONS.

John 5:14; Psalms 107:17-18; 1 Chronicles 21:1,8,7,14,17

We need to set everything straight. You see that when something happened when you are born into the world, or by your parents’ sins, there is nothing like that. After you are born into the world, living your life in the world, there are things that happened that we ourselves is the cause of those infirmities or sickness. It is the fault of a drunkard that cause an accident, not the fault of his parent nor the government officials. Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee” (John 5:14). You are now responsible as a man or woman, be a responsible man, so sin no more. “Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted” (Psalms 107:17) . We are now adults, and if we go back into sinful lives and foolishness, fools because of their sins and transgressions, are destroyed. “And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly” (1 Chronicles 21:8). If a leader become foolish, something will happen to those following that leader, or if a builder becomes foolish that he does not follow the specifications, that might affect the lives of other people. You are a leader, a pastor, parent, bishop, worker, adult, and you do something that is foolish. That foolishness of man is going to have consequence. The people of Israel were destroyed because of the foolishness of David their king.

In life as adults, if we do anything foolish it affects people around us.

1. The Outcome of Sin on Self – Micah 6:13; 1 Corinthians 11:29-30

Sin has consequences on self, companions, communities around you, and in eternity. Don’t allow yourself to be deceived, to be tempted, to be pushed into sinning, because sin has consequences. I pray that God will make us watchful. Sin has consequences on the person that committed the sin. Beware.

2. The Outspread of Sin on others – Genesis 12:14-17; 20:2-8,14-18; Jonah 1:1-4,13-15

There are times somebody commit sin as an adult, and the people around you may suffer the consequences of that sin as well. Pharaoh and his household suffered because of the sin of the king. Abimelech and his house as well suffered for the sin of Abimelech. “Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine” (Genesis 20:7). This is Genesis at the very beginning, God Himself teaching Abimelech on restitution, not Deeper Life doctrine nor Elijah, Elisha, or the Prophets but the Lord God Himself. There are people that said that restitution is very tough and difficult. You choose between doing restitution and stay alive, or refused to do and died. Do restitution and stay alive, and many blessings will flow into your life.

Somebody sin affects other people around, and if you remain in that sin, you will injure your life, and that of people around you. “But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken” (Jonah 1:4). Sin affects that individual, and all the people with Jonah in the ship. The tempest came upon them because of the sin of Jonah, and on those people as well. You must get rid of the sin, and peace will come into your life, and that of the people around you as well.

3. The Outflow of Sin into Eternity – 1 Samuel 3:13; Psalms 92:6-7; Jude 12-13

“For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not” (1 Samuel 3:13). This is the reason we need to take care so that no sin will remain in our lives in Jesus Name. Sin has eternal consequences.

3. THE OBEDIENCE OF MEANINGFUL FAITH IN CHRIST.

John 9:4-12

The Name of my Saviour, Healer and Deliverer is JESUS! And HE will do it for me.

As we look at this in closing, we shall see;

1. The Occupation of the True Christ – John 9:4,5; 4:34; Luke 19:13; Matthew 5:14-16

He said that He has a work to do. We are to occupy till He comes. Also, as believers we are the lights of the world just like Christ, the Light of the world. My light will shine.

2. The Obedience for Total Cure – John 9:6,7

He obeyed the Lord, and you will obey. When you obey, a miracle, the cure, the power of God, the miraculous will follow in your life in Jesus Name.

3. Observation in the Community – John 9:8-11

The Obedience for Total Cure

Many people do not understand how to receive a miracle. They think that the method will always remain the same. See this man, Jesus even made clay to touch his eyes, and He even sent him to go and be washed in the pool of Siloam, the clay could have made this worse, and yet the man went, even he sent him without the help of the disciples to get there, the man went, washed and received his sight. I went, I washed and I received my sight. This will happen to you tonight in Jesus Name.

What kind of obedience did this man had?

1. Obedience without Complaint

2. Obedience without Consultation

3. Obedience without Companionship

4. Obedience without Comparison

5. Obedience without Contentions

6. Obedience without Comprehension

7. Obedience before the Cure

When you come to the end of this obedient tree, your eyes are going to open in Jesus Name.

Christ is still speaking today.

GHS: 47 – JUST OBEY

1.  Just as God who reigns on high,

Spake to men in days gone by;

So the Lord is calling men today;

And, my brother, this is true,

Whatso’er He says to you, (no complaint, no contention, no companion, etc)

There is but one thing to do –

Just obey.

2.  If you’re in the Saviour’s hands,

You must do as He commands,

For there is no other gospel way;

Never put the message by,

Never stop to reason “why”, (why did he put the clay on my eyes, sending me to the place where I have not be before)

When the Saviour speaks to you –

Just obey.

3.  If for mansions fair you sigh,

In that land beyond the sky,

After time with you has pass’d away;

Tho’ the way you may not see,

Christ is calling, “follow me, ”

Faith and duty both will cry – (meaningful, manifestation of faith)

Just obey.

Just obey . . ., Just obey . . .,

Is the way . . ., God’s way. .. ,

When His message comes to you,

There is but one thing to do:

Just obey . . ., Just obey.

And at the end of that land of obedience, a miracle will meet you there.

Ponder on this! Jesus Christ has not changed, His power has not changed, and all the possibilities in His Name has not changed. He gives sight to those who are blind. Pastor (Dr) W.F Kumuyi.

Reflection – After we are born again, our hearts are transformed, but the notions, culture that we grew up with, all those notions need to be corrected. Pastor (Dr) W.F Kumuyi.
